TPS Re-Registration Period Open for Nicaragua
December 20th, 2017
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced on December 15, 2017 that the re-registration period for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) beneficiaries from Nicaragua is open. Re-registration must be completed between December 15, 2017 and February 13, 2018. The procedure for re-registration (including how to renew employment authorization) is available on the USCIS website.
All applicants must submit the applicable forms and fees to USCIS during this re-registration period. DHS notes that because of the timeframes involved with processing TPS re-registration applications, DHS will automatically extend the validity of EADs issued under the TPS designation for Nicaragua for 60 days (through March 6, 2018). Additionally, TPS beneficiaries from Nicaragua who timely re-register and properly file EAD applications will have the validity of their current EAD card automatically extended for up to 180 days from the date their current EAD expires. Finally, upon approval of the re-registration request, USCIS will issue new EAD Cards with a January 5, 2019 expiration.
In November 2017, former Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke determined that conditions in Nicaragua no longer supported TPS designation. Duke delayed the effective date of termination by one year to allow time for an orderly transition for those affected. The final delayed effective date for Nicaragua's TPS designation is January 5, 2019.
